বাংলাদেশী আলোকচিত্রী নূর আলম ২০০৮ সালে পাঠশালা সাউথ এশিয়া মিডিয়া ইন্সটিটিউট থেকে ফটো সাংবাদিকতায় ডিগ্রি নেন। তার আগে লিটল ম্যাগ-এ ছোটগল্প আর দৈনিক পত্রিকা ইত্তেফাক-এর ফিচার পাতায় লেখালেখির সাথে ছবি তোলা শুরু করেন ২০০২ সাল থেকেই।
বর্তমানে ছবি তোলাই তার পেশা ও নেশা। ফটোসাংবাদিকতা এবং দীর্ঘমেয়াদী গবেষণাধর্মী ডকুমেন্টারি প্রজেক্টে তার মূল আগ্রহ। যে সমস্ত বিষয়ে আগে কাজ হয়নি ও বর্তমানে আলোকপাত করা জরুরী মনে করেন, কাজের বিষয় হিসেবে বেছে নেন তা। ছবিতে আলো-ছায়া, কম্পোজিশন ও রং নিয়ে পরীক্ষা করতে পছন্দ করেন। অধিকাংশ ক্ষেত্রে ক্লাসিকাল স্টাইলে কাজ করলেও অন্য স্টাইলেও রয়েছে তার দারুন আগ্রহ।
সচেতনতা ও প্রতিবাদ তার কাজের মূল প্রেরণা। তিনি বিশ্বাস করেন, গণমানুষের কাছে পৌঁছানোর সবচেয়ে শক্তিশালী মাধ্যম আলোকচিত্র এবং তাই প্রচলিত গ্যালারি কাঠামোর বাইরে আলোকচিত্রকে সাধারণ মানুষের কাছে পৌঁছে দিতে চান তিনি। সেই ভাবনা থেকেই তার প্রথম কাজ “রক্তকণিকা ও কিছু দীর্ঘশ্বাস”, বাংলাদেশের থ্যালাসেমিয়া নিয়ে প্রথম সচেতনামূলক প্রদর্শনী ও বইয়ের প্রকাশনা করেন ২০০৯ সালে। ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের চারুকলার জয়নুল গ্যালারিতে প্রদর্শিত হবার পর নিজ উদ্যেগে এই চলমান প্রদর্শনী তিনি নিয়ে গেছেন বিভিন্ন কলেজ ও বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় ক্যাম্পাসে। তারই ধারাবাহিকতায় ২০১১ সালে সড়ক দুর্ঘটনা নিয়ে তার সচেতনামূলক কাজ ,”অন্ধকার সড়ক ও কিছু যন্ত্রদানবের গল্প” প্রদর্শিত হয় ছবির হাট ও পাবলিক লাইব্রেরির খোলা চত্বরে।
এছাড়া যৌথ প্রদর্শনী হিসেবে জেলেদের নিয়ে তার “পদ্মা নদীর জেলে” কাজটি প্রদর্শিত হয় ইতালির রিভা দেল গারদা শহরে ২০১৩ সালে। রোহিঙ্গা জনগোষ্ঠী নিয়ে ”দ্যা বর্ডার অফ লোনলিনেস” কাজটি প্রদর্শিত হয় ইরানের তেহরান শহরে ২০১৭ সালে। ঢাকায় শিল্পকলা একাডেমিতে ছবি মেলা ৪ এ “স্টুডেন্ট ওয়ার্ক” হিসেবে প্রদর্শিত হয় ২০০৭ সালে, Alliance Francaise De Dhaka এ “সামথিং এবাউট রিফ্লেকশন” প্রদর্শিত হয় ২০০৬ সালে, Goethe Institute “আওয়ার স্টোরিজ: মিডেলক্লাস ইন বাংলাদেশ “, এ প্রদর্শিত হয় ২০০৯ সালে।
প্রকৃতি ও পরিবেশ নিয়ে তার ভালোবাসা ও উদ্বিগ্নতা ফুটে উঠেছে নদীর কথা, বুড়িগঙ্গা দূষণ, সাইক্লোন সিডর, কোভিদ ১৯, মাতারবাড়ির কয়লা বিদ্যুৎ প্রজেক্টের কাজে। তার ব্যক্তিগত জীবনের গল্পগুলো উঠে এসেছে মৃত্যুছায়া, নস্টালজিয়া, অন্তঃক্ষরণ, সেলফ পোর্ট্রেট কাজের মধ্যে দিয়ে।
নিজের কাজের পাশাপাশি নূর আলম British Daily ”The Guardian News“ এ কন্ট্রিবিউটর হিসেবে কাজ করেন। এছাড়া বিভিন্ন জাতীয় ও আন্তর্জাতিক সংস্থা-GIZ, UK AID, ACTION AID, FOEA এর সাথে কাজ করেন নিয়মিত। তার কাজ প্রকাশিত হয়েছে বিভিন্ন জাতীয় ও আন্তর্জাতিক পত্রিকা ও ম্যাগাজিনে। তার মধ্যে উল্লেখযোগ্য- Time Asia, The Diplomat, The Guardian News, The Herald Newspaper, TIF Magazine, Himal Magazine.
Bangladeshi photographer Noor Alam graduated in photojournalism from Pathshala South Asian Media Institute in 2008. Prior to that in 2002 he had started photography along with writing short stories and features for ‘Little Mag’ and as a contributor for ‘Daily Ittefaq’.
Today, photography is his passion and profession. Along with photojournalism, his main interest is in research-based long-term documentary projects. He picks neglected issues and topics that need to be addressed. He likes to experiment with light and shadow, composition and colour in his image making. While mostly working in the classical style, he has a keen interest in other styles as well.
Awareness and protest are the main motivations for Noor. He believes that photography is the most powerful medium to reach the masses and strives to take this medium to the common people outside the conventional gallery framework. From this idea of reaching out to the masses, he published his first work in 2009, “Ballads of the Agonized Souls”, Bangladesh’s first awareness exhibition and book on thalassemia. After being exhibited at the Zainul Gallery of Dhaka University Faculty of Fine Arts, he initiated taking this exhibition to several college and university campuses. In continuation of this initiative, in 2011, his awareness building project on road safety, “Tears on Highway” was displayed at open spaces of Chobir Haat and Public Library in the Dhaka University campus.
His other exhibitions include a group photography exhibition, the work on fishing community of Bangladesh “Fishermen of Padma River” was exhibited in Riva del Garda, Italy in 2013; the work on the Myanmar Rohingya refugees “The Border of Loneliness” was exhibited in Tehran, Iran in 2017; “Our Stories: Middle Class in Bangladesh”, was exhibited in Goethe-Institute Dhaka in 2009.
His love and concern for nature and the environment is constantly evident in his work Song of the River, Buriganga Pollution, Cyclone Sidr, Covid-19, Kutubdia Island and the list continues. Stories of his personal life emerge through his thoughtful works like the Shadows of Death, Nostalgia, introspection, and Self-Portrait Series.
In addition to his own projects, Noor Alam works as a contributor in the British Daily “The Guardian News”. Besides, he regularly works with various national and international organizations – GIZ, UK AID, ACTION AID, FOEA etc. Several of his works have been published in various national and international newspapers and magazines, i.e.Time Asia, The Diplomat, The Guardian News, The Herald Newspaper, TIF Magazine, Himal Southasian.
